I was just reading my daily section of the Bible. I’m in Mark. I don’t read a whole chapter at a time. I just read a section. It takes me a very long time to read through the Bible. In yesterday’s section, Mark 7:34 “He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”). In today’s section I read Mark 8:12. “He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.”

That got me wondering. Jesus sighed. It doesn’t seem to hold up to my thoughts of Jesus being fully God and this life was a cake walk right up until they crucified him. He was God. How could he feel any emotion other than happy, happy, joy, joy. I sometimes forget he was fully man as well. He felt every one of our emotions and fleshly thoughts.

I believe he sighed in Mark 7:34 because he knew the crowds were only going to get bigger with this miracle. And they did. In the next section you see where it says, “During those days another large crowd gathered and again they were hungry.” Jesus talked to them for three days and they had nothing to eat. That means Jesus was talking for three days with possibly not much to eat and no sleep. He knew this was coming and he was tired. So when he did that miracle, it was out of compassion and obedience. He went against his flesh to help someone and to obey. It was not easy for him down here.

I believe he signed in Mark 8:12 because he was frustrated with the Pharisees hard heartedness. Some translations change the sigh to a moan. Jesus moaned and sighed. That is why he had to have quiet times with the Father. He had to talk it out with the Father and receive strength from Him.

If Jesus got tired and frustrated, we shouldn’t feel so bad when we get that way too. However, we should follow his example (I’m talking to myself here.) and talk it out with God. We get to talk it out with Jesus and the Father through the Holy Spirit.

I’m not sure why I wait so long to talk things over with God. I always feel better and the load lifts. God is good.
